On yesterday's episode of Loose Women, panellist Saira Khan broke down as she emotionally told viewers of the moment she adopted her now five-year-old daughter, Amara.

The 48-year-old spoke candidly about the adoption journey, revealing that she travelled to her family’s home country, Pakistan, to adopt her daughter. Saira adopted Amara in 2011, after fertility issues meant she was unable to have another child naturally.

Reflecting on the very first moment she met Amara, in a hospital after she was given up by her birth mother, Saira said, “All I remember is when they put her in my arms, she was mine,”

“That was it. I looked into these eyes, huge eyes, and they were staring back at me like that. Going through the adoption process for nine months, I knew in my head, this is the bit where the process kicks in.”

Amara also made an appearance on the show alongside her mum, leaving viewers gushing over how adorable she is.

The mum-of-two, who also shares son Zachariah with her husband Steve, then broke down, as she thanked Amara’s birth mother for putting her into a cradle on the side of the road, for adoption.

She also heartbreakingly revealed that daughters are often left in cradles for orphanages to pick them up, next to signs that read, ‘Please do not kill your baby’.

Struggling to hold back her tears, she said, “We know nothing but I always say, and I’m going to take this moment to say it to whoever is out there. Thank you for putting her in that cradle.”

“Some babies don’t get into the cradles for whatever reason. There’s a special lady out there, who we always say a little wish for her. And to say thank you for what you’ve done for us.”

She went on to explain how the cradles are dotted all over Pakistan, and are often filled with baby girls, “for whatever reason”

Saira also shared with her fellow panellists and the audience that Amara was seriously unwell when she was given to her. She revealed how doctors then gave her a terrible choice, to give back the baby if she wanted to.

She said, “Although she didn’t come out of my tummy, that bond that when you have a baby put into your arms, at that moment I had to make a decision. I don’t know what’s wrong with this baby, I will never know about her medical condition, what do I do?

“The doctor said, ‘Do you want to carry on or do you want to take the baby back? We can swap it for another one’. And I said, ‘This baby is mine and whatever happens to her, I am taking her back to the UK.’ And I did. She was in intensive care for seven days.”

Saira also said that she and Steve know nothing about Saira’s biological mum.

But the Loose Women star continued, explaining that Amara is well aware of her birth mother. Saira revealed, “I am her mummy. She had another ‘tummy mummy’ which Amara knows about. We celebrate the way she’s come into our life.

“And I am so grateful that I had infertility problems, because I would never have had this beautiful child in my life.”
