As Poldark gears up for a brand new series, actress Eleanor Tomlinson has revealed her frustration at being paid less than co-star Aidan Turner.
The 26-year-old – who’s played Demelza on the hit BBC One series since it started in 2015 – revealed she thinks Aidan previously earned more for his role as Ross Poldark.
But after growing in popularity over the last few years, Eleanor admitted she will be ‘upset’ if their pay isn’t the same now that they both play lead parts in the show.
Speaking on whether she thinks they’re equals, Eleanor told Red magazine: “My guess is no. And while at the beginning that might have been ok – he was a bigger star than me – now I don’t think so.
“We’re equal leads of the show, so I’d be pretty upset if the gap hadn’t closed.”
A spokeswoman for Mammoth Screen – who are in charge of the actors’ salaries – has since confirmed Aidan is paid more for his role as he has ‘significantly more screen time’.
“Whilst we can’t and won’t disclose the details we do pay Aidan Turner more for playing Ross Poldark as throughout all series Ross has significantly more screen time than any other character,” she said.
Meanwhile, Eleanor has opened up about her friendship with her on-screen husband, saying they are great friends but argue a lot.
“We do row. We row about everything – usually our characters,” she said.
“We’re both ridiculously protective of them and squabble like an old married couple.
“Usually it’s one of us saying that our character wouldn’t behave a certain way. Aidan loves everything being his. But then he loves to wind me up.”
Fans went wild earlier this month when it was reveled the BBC show would be returning to our telly screens for a fifth season.
Announcing the exciting news, Eleanor previously said: “I’m looking forward to some more cliff-staring which is actually why I’m sending this video message because I can confirm that we are going to make series five of Poldark.
“So exciting! Thank you so much for all your support. We wouldn’t have been there, we wouldn’t have made this show what it’s become without you guys so thank you for that.”
