Former TOWIE star Kate Wright has paid tribute to her boyfriend Rio Ferdinand, after he scooped a BAFTA Award for a documentary made in honour of his late wife.
In an emotional Instagram post, Kate revealed she felt ‘overwhelmed’ with mixed emotions, after Rio won an award for something that was made through sadness.
Alongside a snap of her beau, she wrote: ‘My baby won a bafta!!! Overwhelmed with emotion for you… Feels strange to be happy through winning something through sadness, but I’m so happy for you, for raising awareness and helping others.’
Rio scooped the prestigious award for Being Mum And Dad – a documentary he made on how it felt to have to suddenly become both parents to his three children, after he tragically lost his wife Rebecca Ellison to breast cancer in 2015.
Despite the fact he’s since moved on with reality TV star Kate, she insisted that his late wife’s memory will live on for ever.
‘You are amazing, here is to the future , but always keeping the past in our hearts. I love you,’ she continued.
This isn’t the first time Kate – who moved in with Rio and his three children earlier this year – has openly spoken about how, as a family, they keep Rebecca’s legacy alive.
on Mother’s Day, she wrote: ‘Happy Mother’s Day to my lovely mum, I love you so much,’ she began, before going on to express her sadness for Rio’s children on such a difficult day.
‘Although I am lucky to have my mum here with me today I can’t help but feel so overwhelmed and full of emotions that both Rio and the children don’t have their mums with them today,’ she said.
After accepting the gong, Rio paid tribute to his ‘beautiful’ girlfriend and said the couple are taking steps ‘in the right direction’ to building a future together.
Appearing visually emotional, Rio said: ‘I’m just pleased to say that this documentary has played a part in propelling me forward into a period of happiness in my life now where my kids are very happy.’
