The secret to avoiding a hangover? Stay off the booze.

But it’s party season. And we love a wine. So if you ARE going to indulge in a tipple or two… Here’s something very easy you can do to limit the damage.


Well, according to Dr Seymour Diamond of the National Headache Foundation, drinking two strong cups of coffee before a night out can help prevent you feeling hungover.

Caffeine constructs blood vessels, alleviating wine’s nasty effects.

Andrew Langford, chief executive of the British Liver Trust, agrees with the theory. He said: “Many people do tend to reach for a coffee after a night out drinking. And there is evidence of its beneficial effects.”

Five or more cups of coffee a day can reduce levels of an enzyme known to be a precursor to liver damage, heart disease and diabetes by up to 50 per cent.


The type of wine you choose can also affect whether you have a sore head in the morning or not. Dry wines are lower in sugar, therefore are less likely to give you a headache. But dessert and red wines should be consumed more sparingly if you want to avoid the post-drinking throb.
