We knew it!
‘Go to bed early.’ ‘Keep your room tidy.’ ‘And don’t you ever dare use a swear word’ are the golden rules kids are generally told to stick to.
But if you were a bit of a rebel as a child, there could actually be a pretty good reason behind it.
People who stay up late, are habitually messy and curse left, right and centre are apparently more intelligent. And here’s why….
People who are night owls…
If you like to stay up late, you’re definitely in good company. President Obama, Charles Darwin, Winston Churchill and Elvis Presley are all famous for burning the midnight oil.
Evolutionary psychologist at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Satoshi Kanazawa, explained in Psychology Today: “More intelligent children grow up to be more nocturnal as adults than less intelligent children.” Netflix marathon, anyone?
People who are messy…
“Disorderly environments seem to inspire breaking free of tradition. And this can produce fresh insights,” Kathleen Vohs, a psychological scientist, found after conducting a series of experiments.
“Orderly environments, in contrast, encourage convention and playing it safe.” So a messy desk can actually inspire creativity (okay, maybe not the empty coffee cups and last week’s receipts….)
People who use curse words…
According to the Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT), those who can name the most swear words in a minute, also have a higher IQ.
A study by psychologists Kristin Jay and Timothy Jay argues: “fluency is fluency” when it comes to taboo words.
