On a quest to avoid looking frumpy over 40, Kath Brown, 51, and Paula Moore, 42, search out clothes that look good on grown-up women.

KATH BROWN: My eternal search for stylish dresses with sleeves. This is my Fashion blog on slimming dresses.

I love dresses… I want to buy more!

But the styles that look good on me are annoying elusive. I’m not an unusual shape. In fact I am extremely average – size 12, a few lumps and bumps and some less than toned areas I would rather keep covered. So nothing unusual really.

These are my requirements for stylish slimming dresses…

Upper arms can make an appearance when I’m really brown and on holiday but when I’m going about my normal life I’d rather not have bingo wings on display.

Fabric that doesn’t cling

Jersey is a definite no no! I like silky material that flows and quite stiff fabrics that hold everything in.

Gold dress, £28, F+F, monochrome dress, £48, Asos, black dress, £129, Coast

No billowing fabric

What I need is fitted but not too fitted. A belt is good but sometimes a well-cut shift or body con style works well too.

Flattering length

Just below the knee is perfect, but a bit shorter is OK in winter with thick tights and ankle boots. I occasionally wear a midi but only with high shoes.

While it may be quite difficult for us “normal” women to find dresses that really fit and flatter, there are always a few to be hunted down.

With this in mind the Woman fashion team have trawled the high street to find the styles that get the modern not mutton seal of approval. Watch Kath and Paula chatting through the best styles, dresses and their expert fashion tips below.
