It’s one of the Queen’s favourite official events every year, and a diary date that she truly looks forward to in her calendar. Today, along with the rest of the royal family, The Queen, dressed in a bright green outfit, attended Royal Ascot to enjoy a hot summer’s day at the races.
The Duchess of Cambridge, resplendent in lace, was of course in attendance and arrived by carriage with Prince William and his Uncle Prince Edward along Sophie Countess of Wessex. The close relationship between Kate and the Countess of Wessex was clear as the pair laughed and joked in the carriage as they pulled in to the famous Ascot grounds.
Kate opted for a summery white lace gown for royal Ascot with a delicate high-neckline and modest below-the-knee hemline that complies with Ascot’s strict dress code. Despite temperatures soaring above 30 degrees today, the Duchess endured the heat in long lace sleeves. Along with her signature nude heels and a matching clutch bag, she completed the look with delicate pearl-drop earrings and a hat which perfectly matched her outfit.
The dress, which was custom made for the Duchess of Cambridge by her go-to designer Alexander McQueen, is the third new dress worn by Kate from the label in the last month.
It was only a few days ago that the Duchess turned heads in a bright pink dress by the designer for Trooping the Colour, and Kate also chose a dusky pink outfit by McQueen to wear to her sister Pippa Middleton’s wedding in May.
Her bespoke dress today has echoes of Kate’s now iconic lace wedding dress, designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, back in 2011.
The Kate Middleton Ascot 2017 dress is incredibly similar to the dress worn by the Duchess last year. Previously, in 2016, Kate chose a cream lace dress of similar design with a high neckline for the occasion. After she debuted the look, the Duchess received widespread praise for her fashion-forward and elegant ensemble, with many people calling the look her ‘outfit of the year’. It may be, that following the success of last year’s dress, Kate opted for a similar look this year to emulate the postive reaction to her fashion-forward ensemble.
The Duke and Duchess are set to take centre stage at one point during the day today, as they will present a trophy to one of the race winners.
As is tradition at royal Ascot, the day was a family affair. Prince Charles as in attendance with his wife, Camilla. Also, Princess Beatrice and Eugenie were spotted enjoying the spectacle, as were Zara Tindall and her husband Mike.
