Great hair tops most women’s beauty wish list and it appears we are willing to try out all manners of weird and wonderful things to try and get it.

From adopting ancient rituals of washing hair in rice water, to expensive lotions and potions, there always seems to be some latest hair craze promising longer, stronger locks.

Thankfully, research has now concluded that the simplest trick for getting really great hair won’t cost you much at all; you just need to rotate your shampoo!

Beauty expert Dr Nicole Rogers, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, told the Wall Street Journal that this is the most effective way to get your hair in great shape.

Changing your shampoo regularly not only gets rid of build up, you should also take into account seasonal changes when it comes to the products you use.

Nicole claims that this trick is particularly effective in winter, as dry and cold air makes your hair more difficult to maintain and style. Look out for nourishing ingredients such as glycerin or domethicone to keep hair shiny.

In summer, the heat means we perspire more and our hair becomes dirtier a lot quicker, so we should use a cleansing shampoo with sulphate to combat greasiness.

If your diet changes or you have developed dandruff, that is also a good time to switch shampoo.

There is a common myth that you need to rotate your shampoo as your hair becomes immune to its ingredients. This isn’t true. Hair is dead as soon as it leaves your scalp, so cannot become resistant to some certain shampoos.

However, as Nicole explains in her study, your hair has different needs at different times, so will still benefit from a change up.
