Want to shape up and lose a few pounds in time for summer? Then this is what to do – simply follow these 10 tips and you will feel and look slimmer in days.
1 EAT LIKE A MAN
No! You can’t eat meat pies and drink pints, but new UK research reveals the reason we store fat in certain places like the backs of our arms and above our bra-line can be linked to the lack of the male hormone – testosterone. Gently boost its production by eating plenty of wholegrain cereals, nuts, leafy green vegetables and Marmite which can also help with digestion.
2 STRESS CAN MAKE YOU SLIM
New research on a group of UK slimmers proves that a little bit of stress can actually help you lose weight as it activates the production of healthy ‘brown fat’ which burns the glucose in the body to create heat – eating up calories in the process. So when you’re feeling under pressure to get something done at work or at home just think about the added slimming benefit you’ll have when you get the job done.
3 GO FOR THE AFTERBURN
Make time for a short workout or a brisk walk before you eat. Celebrity personal trainer, Matt Roberts who has helped the likes of Naomi Campbell shape up, says that eating before you exercise will increase the rate at which you burn calories when you do tuck into a meal. You may only burn around 10gm of fat after a 60 minute exercise session but you’ll go on burning calories over the next few days that will rack that up to nearer 49gm. Aim to work out three times a week for up to an hour and you could shift up to 3lbs in seven days.
4 STAY IN BED!
Going to bed just 30 minutes earlier than your usual time and setting the alarm 30 minutes earlier can help you make better food choices. If you aim for a regular 7-8 hours every night it prevents the body producing leptin, the hunger hormone that is released when we’re low in energy and makes us eat more. Get an early night at least three nights a week and you could lose 1lb by the weekend.
5 EAT IN PEACE
If you want to eat less, turn off the tv / hi-fi before heading to the dining table, and tune into the sound of your food being chewed. This can have a significant effect on how much food you eat. A study proved that people ate ¼ less when eating in silence.
6 FEAST ON FATS
Scientists have confirmed that eating omega 3-rich fats boosts our metabolism. Something fans of the Mediterranean diet including gorgeous Penelope Cruz have known for years. The healthy fats found in salmon, tuna, nuts, avocados – and dark chocolate help the body to absorb the antioxidants so you burn calories faster. Add cashew and peanuts to stir-fries and toss salads with an olive oil and fresh lemon dressing. Wiley’s Finest Orange Burst Oil, ensures you get a good dose of omega extracts every day, £15.99, at wileysfinest.co.uk.
7 GO FOR COLD
Sleeping in a cold room could actually help you lose weight. Following a ground-breaking new scientific study, it was discovered that sleeping in a cooler room (around 18C) can help you shed pounds because the body’s metabolism speeds up to keep you warm.
8 FILL UP ON FIBRE
Most of us only eat around 15g of fibre-based foods like wholegrains and veg a day but if we increased that to around 40gm we’d feel less hungry. Heap your plate high with broccoli, kale, corn and pulses and you’ll only be consuming around 200 calories a plate-full. Eating more fruit and veg raw – up to four portions a day can help you lose up to 2lbs in a week. Fibre One is a new range of snacks and cereals packed with fibre if you need a sweet fix, try the Lemon Drizzle flavour bars, just 90 calories each, £2 for 5, Tesco.
9 MAKE MINE A MILKSHAKE
Us Celebrity nutritionist Dr Oz says that a lack of calcium in your daily diet encourages your hormones to lay down visceral fat – the kind that typically clings around your waist. The average woman should be having 1000 milligrams a day but many of us have a lot less. A small tub of full fat Yoghurt contains 20% of your recommended daily allowance or whip up a milkshake using 150ml semi skimmed milk and a handful of blended berries.
10 JUMP TO IT
Every time you get the urge to snack, get down and do 20 squats, 20 star jumps or run on the spot instead. Very often we think we’re hungry, but when we distract ourselves by doing something else, the feeling goes away. Doing short bursts of exercise will not only help you burn around 50 calories a go, it will stop you giving into temptation, helping you lose pounds, quicker.
