Single mum Siobhan from Glasgow was previously a size 22, and after giving birth to her baby daughter, she weighed nearly 17 stone. Now, she’s a slim size 10 and weighs nine stone. Her secret? Well, the Scottish café worker made just one simple change to her lifestyle in order to transform her figure, and her life.
Previously a fan of junk food and carb-heavy, fat-filled meals such as macaroni cheese or a big English breakfast, you may have thought that Siobhan lost over eight stone by committing to a healthy diet and hitting the gym.
But according to Siobhan that is not the case. A balanced diet and regular exercise are certainly recommended to lead healthy lifestyle. However, Siobhan’s secret to losing nearly half of her body weight was doing just one, simple “underrated” thing twice a day. Drinking a cup of green tea!
Siobhan revealed that she drunk at least two cups of green tea every day, and began to see the difference. Now weighing around 9 stone, the mum-of-one is more confident than ever.
She told The Mirror, “I used to avoid looking at myself – now my confidence is through the roof and I’ve halved my BMI.”
“I am certain that I lost the first three stone through drinking green tea alone.”
“My metabolism just went through the roof and I hadn’t done much else.”
Is green tea weight loss really possible?
Green tea certainly has many benefits, but is weight loss really one of them? We asked the experts…
Shona Wilkinson, Nutritionist at SuperfoodUK, had this to say:
“Catechins (a type of natural phenol and antioxidant) in green tea is responsible for many of its incredible benefits”
“Green tea’s relationship with weight management has been cropping up in the news lately and there is a greater interest in its potential use! Of course, we cannot solely rely on this when attempting to lose weight. A change in lifestyle, nutrition and diet are also important. Catechins properties include fat metabolism (break down of fat cells) and a rise in metabolic rate (helping us to convert food consumed to energy at a higher rate instead of being accumulated in fat cells).”
Amy Morris, Naturopathic Nutritionist for Water for Health added:
“There are many health benefits associated with drinking organic green tea regularly. Some studies have found green tea to have a positive effect on weight loss, boosting the metabolism and also helping to burn fat; this is because it contains caffeine and a higher concentration of polyphenols, called catechins, which are linked to weight loss.”
“Catechins could help to prevent the build-up of body fat, as well as increase body temperature, so your body will burn naturally more calories. Green tea has also been shown to prevent lipolysis, the process by which dietary fats are broken down in the body. Inhibiting this process means it is harder for the body to absorb fat, which could result in weight loss. According to researchers, to get the amount of caffeine and catechins claimed to help you lose weight, you’d need to drink 2 to 3 cups of green tea a day, and the stronger the brew, the better if your goal is weight loss. The jury is still out on this however, as studies have also found green tea to have no effect on weight loss.”
Green tea is also credited with, amongst other things, helping to balance cholesterol levels, protect your teeth and gums, and it apparently has anti-ageing properties. We certainly know what we’ll be having instead of a cuppa today!
