Zara Tindall has spoken of the heartbreak her husband Mike experienced after they suffered two miscarriages.
Speaking on BBC Breakfast this morning, the 37-year-old opened up about how men can struggle with feeling ‘helpless’ following the tragedy.
“It’s very different for us because we’re carrying the child, but for guys I guess it’s kind of that helpless feeling, which must be incredibly high and horrible for them,” Zara explained.
“At the end of the day they’ve still lost a child too.
“Being helpless is horrible, isn’t it? For anyone. It’s been a horrible road but, you know, actually now we’ve come out the end of it, hopefully it makes you a stronger family.”
Zara – who has daughters Mia, 4, and three-month-old Lena with former rugby player Mike, 39 – revealed in November 2016 that she had suffered a miscarriage one month after announcing her pregnancy.
She then explained in an interview this summer that she had had another miscarriage just before becoming pregnant with Lena.
Zara admitted during today’s chat that it was difficult to go through this in the public eye, though was touched to receive messages of support.
“I think that’s the hardest thing in our situation, is that everyone knew,” she said.
“And very much when things like that happen, normally it’s just your family and friends, but unfortunately everyone knew about it.
“Actually I had so many letters saying ‘I’m so sorry, we’ve been through the same thing’, which was incredible – and thank you to all those people.
“But it just showed how often it does happen and I have a very supportive family, Mike’s incredible – and it’s hard for the guys too.”
Zara previously told The Sunday Times this summer that at first she struggled to talk about what she’d been through after her first miscarriage.
“I had to go through having the baby because it was so far along. I then had another miscarriage really early on,” the former Olympian admitted.
“You need to go through a period where you don’t talk about it because it’s too raw but, as with everything, time’s a great healer.”
