It was a night of success for the showbiz community, with all the stars dusting off their finest gowns in the name of the National Television Awards.

Taking to the red carpet, Piers Morgan joined co-host Susanna Reid and the rest of his Good Morning Britain team for the star-studded event – having received a nomination for Best Daytime Show.

Despite a year of hard work, however, 53-year-old Piers sadly missed out on raising the esteemed accolade with his GMB team – as rival breakfast show This Morning scooped in and won the gong.

Taking to the GMB studio earlier today, Piers failed to hold back his disappointment – confessing he was “livid” at the outcome.

Opening the show, Piers, Susanna and their correspondents Charlotte Hawkins and Richard Arnold welcomed viewers with a comically glum greeting.

Sarcastically, Piers joked: “Well Good Morning Britain, thanks.”

Susanna added: “What do we have to do? I promised to be hammered. Completely sober as a judge.”

Continuing the gag, Piers then laid into Ant McPartlin – who was named Best TV Presenter alongside co-star Declan Donnelly, despite his extended hiatus from the spotlight.

“It just shows all you have to do is have the worst year of your career,” he retorted.

“You walk the dog all year and then you get presenter of the year. What are we doing here?

“Someone get me a damn dog and I’ll go out walking it for a year.”

Suggesting the results had been “rigged”, Piers then demanded the votes to be recounted.

“I think we were robbed. I think the election was rigged.”

Signing off today’s edition of the show, Piers finally concluded that he wouldn’t be showing up for work the next day…

However, despite Piers’ on-screen rage, the TV personality couldn’t hide his delight for This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield – leaping up to congratulate the pair on their triumph.

As Holly and Phil made their way onstage to accept the gong for a ninth year in a row, Piers embraced the presenters in a congratulatory hug.

There’s always next year, Piers!
