Loose Women panellist Carol McGiffin has just revealed that she married her long-term partner Mark Cassidy in a secret ceremony in Thailand one year ago.
Despite recent TV appearances on the ITV show, Carol has kept quiet about her special day with Mark – whom she has been engaged to since 2008.
Writing in her column for Best magazine, Carol, 58, admitted they tied the knot on February 8, 2018.
“No one knew we were going to do it, but we’ve basically spent the last year having separate celebrations with different friends and family, telling them all in person. Now they all know, we’re ready for it to come out,” she wrote.
Carol – who was previously married to presenter Chris Evans – wed 36-year-old Mark in a low-key Bangkok ceremony with no guests present, and two locals acting as witnesses.
They’d planned to marry in a registry office in London the previous year, but called it off when Carol’s sister Tracy, 56, died of breast cancer just a few days before.
They re-booked the ceremony, but ended up cancelling again “because it still didn’t feel right – it was too soon”.
Carol was diagnosed with breast cancer herself in 2014 and underwent a mastectomy, as well as radiotherapy and chemotherapy, before getting the all clear. She later had a facelift as she felt that the cancer treatments had “aged” her.
Carol and Mark are now back in Thailand, celebrating their first wedding anniversary.
“Part of the reason it took us so long to get married was because every time we discussed having a traditional wedding day with guests, it ran out of control and became too much,” she added.
The pair wore everyday clothes, because the Loose Women star wanted to hide a bandage on her leg, and celebrated with dinner after the ceremony.
Carol said they chose Bangkok as it is their favourite place, and somewhere that they could be “anonymous”. The couple are planning a belated honeymoon in the Maldives later this year.
