She’s only been living in the United Kingdom for a matter of months, but it seems the British accent has already rubbed off on the Duchess of Sussex.
Meghan Markle married Prince Harry less than two months ago, and has clearly picked up some of his habits already.
People are now accusing Meghan, 36, of adopting a British accent after a recent video of her during a public appearance was shared on Twitter.
Back in June, Twitter user @elzeiny99 uploaded a video of a conversation she had with the Duchess of Sussex during a royal visit to Cheshire.
With the Queen not far behind, the ever-gracious Meghan greeted and thanked people for coming out and complimenting her dress. As she said: “Thank you, I appreciate that. That’s so kind,” many social media users noticed a huge difference in Meghan’s voice.
Several commenters noted a slightly weird sound to Meghan’s voice, just weeks after her wedding to Prince Harry.
One person wrote: “I hear something I’d describe as a very posh American accent….one I’ve never really heard before. Not quite British not quite American either,” while another user commented: “I’m kind of disappointed. It seems unauthentic for Meghan Markle to be speaking with a British accent. Especially this fast. It makes it seem like something was wrong with the way she sounded before.”
A third person said: “Unreasonably sad about Meghan Markle adopting an English accent and inflexions. We’ve officially lost her to the monarchy.”
Some viewers drew parallels to Madonna’s infamous accent switch in the mid-noughties, while others defended the Duchess and said they didn’t hear any change in her accent.
“She still sounds the same to us Brits. We just hear the American accent no hint of Britishness. Unlike Madonna and that infamous video and her sudden change of accent,” commented one Twitter user.
“She still sounds American to us. No change of accents,” said another, while a third added: “Meghan markle’s british accent is so cute.”
What do you think? Meghan still sounds like her old self for most of the video, but there’s certainly a notable difference at the opening.
