Wondering how to keep your teenagers busy during the summer holidays? National Citizen Service (NCS) could be the answer.

NCS is a once in a lifetime opportunity for 16 and 17 year olds to connect with their local community and build skills for work and life. The programme takes place over 3 weeks, includes action-packed residential time away from home and participants then spend 30 hours carrying out social action projects in their local community.

NCS graduate Coral Doherty, 18, from Droitwich, Worcestershire says, “I did dry-slope skiing, horse-riding and shelter-building. I made friends that I intend to keep for life.”

Participants also learn how to work in teams and boost their CV, “I learned to be confident in my ideas,” explains Coral, who adds that NCS helped her land a part-time job. “The interviewer was impressed by my community work.”

The programme costs up to £50, with bursaries available. “Teenagers need a chance to shine and that’s exactly what NCS gave my daughter. I didn’t believe that it would only cost £50 until I learnt more at a parents’ evening.” says Sharon Lynch, 49, from London, whose daughter, Frieda, attended NCS in 2011.

Summer places are filling up fast and NCS is offering goodtoknow.com parents or guardians of teenagers who sign up, a chance to win an all-inclusive day at a local health spa to enjoy with a friend while your teen is away enjoying NCS.
