Bingo is a game that is enjoyed by millions of people worldwide but do you know where the game originates? Read on for the History of Bingo..

Historic Bingo

Bingo can actually be traced back 500 years to Italy where it was known as ‘Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia’. Its abbreviated name, ‘Lotto’, translates in Italian as fate, or chance. In the late 1770’s the game became popular in France, where it took on a new form called “Le Lotto” – this is when the nine column and three row bingo card was introduced. The concept of a bingo game – or lotto as it was known back then – was simple. A person acted as a caller and drew out 90 numbered wooden chips from a bag, one by one. The first person to cover an entire row was the winner of the game.

Modern Bingo

The Bingo we are familiar with today was developed in America by a man called Edwin S Lowe. Lowe first saw a game of ‘Beano’ at a carnival in Atlanta. This game was based on the Italian Lotto game but called Beano because people used uncooked beans to mark the called numbers of their cards. Once the player completed an entire row, they had to shout ‘Beano’ in order to claim the prize. Lowe heard a player with a winning card mispronounce the game and shout “Bingo!” which gave him the idea to rename and market it. It didn’t take long for the new game to spread through America and it soon became popular with churches, who used it as a social event for fundraising.

Online Bingo

With the growth of the internet and online gaming, it was inevitable that Bingo would also become available to play online. Online Bingo was based on an entirely new concept and gave players the chance to win big jackpots from the comfort of their own homes. The online chat rooms provided players with the option of live chat and kept the social side of Bingo, which is still an integral part of the game.

Woman Bingo is an online bingo site with a large variety of games and huge progressive jackpots. You can make lots of friends in the chat rooms and there is always something fun happening on site.
