We’re bombarded with health advice and it’s often hard to know what to take seriously. We’ve quizzed the experts to find out whether you can slow the ageing process?
Dr Ellie Cannon is a GP and Woman’s medical columnist:
“You can’t fight ageing, though a healthy lifestyle can slow it down. Smoking, a poor diet and sun exposure age us prematurely. Eating oily fish, fruit and vegetables and healthy fibre all helps prevent some of the signs of old age. Keeping your mind and body active is another way to stay young – research has that working, reading and doing crosswords can stave off dementia.”
Sarah West is a freelance nutritionist:
“Ageing is driven by a build-up of damage in our cells, tissues and organs, which nutrition and lifestyle can help prevent. Our skin benefits from fitness and good food. A diet full of brightly coloured fruits and vegetables, wholegrains, dairy products and lean protein can assist in fighting inflammation and keeping your skin looking its best, while too much sugar and processed carbs can damage the collagen that keeps skin plump. Exercise is also important as it produces feel-good endorphins and helps keep skin looking younger and smoother.”
Dr Anousheh Alavi is a dental surgeon and scientific affairs manager for Colgate:
“Our parents were the first generation not to have to wear dentures as a matter of course, and now tooth decay and gum disease are largely preventable. Teeth may darken naturally over time, due to thinning of tooth enamel and some darkening of dentine. Discolouration also comes from staining, mostly due to smoking, drinking red wine, coffee and tea, so limiting these can help. Also, reduce the amount of sugary snacks you eat as these encourage bacteria that causes decay. Effective oral hygiene will keep gum disease at bay. Brushing your teeth twice daily with a clinically proven antibacterial toothpaste and using floss or interdental brushes is the best way to keep your smile at its healthy best at any age.”
