Designer Emilia Wickstead has issued an apologetic statement, after reports surfaced that she had criticised the Duchess of Sussex’s wedding dress.
The designer, who is a well-known favourite of the Duchess of Cambridge, posted a statement on her Instagram, after reports claimed that she had said Meghan’s Givenchy gown was a ‘copy’ of one of her own.
She wrote, “I am extremely saddened by the commentary that has appeared in the press and on-line over the past few days.
“Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Sussex looked absolutely beautiful on her wedding day and I have the utmost admiration and respect for her.”
Emilia continued, “I do not think that her wedding dress was a copy of any of our designs. I have the greatest respect for Clare Waight Keller and the House of Givenchy – a huge source of inspiration to me.
“I wish Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a wonderful, happy and love filled life together. Emilia.”
The official statement from the royal-approved designer comes just days after her alleged comments surfaced. It is reported that Emilia said of Meghan’s wedding dress, “Her dress is identical to one of our dresses – apparently a lot of commentators were saying, ‘It’s an Emilia Wickstead dress.'”
“If you choose a simple design the fit should be perfect. Her wedding dress was quite loose.”
It’s also been reported that the popular high-end designer critiqued the royal bride’s wedding hair-do too. She allegedly said, “I was like, ‘Hold the wisps [of her hair] back — it’s a Royal Wedding for God’s sake.'”
But despite her attempt to clear up the gossip, fans appeared to be rather unimpressed by Emilia’s statement.
Commenting on the post, one said, ‘Such a non apology. I was a fan but have to admit that this doesn’t look good.’ Another agreed, ‘That’s a non apology apology. And it’s a bit too late to backpedal on your previous comments.’
Eek! However, others defended Emilia. One wrote, ‘people are entitled to their opinion.’ While another said, ‘I’m sorry about what you and your team are going throw…Keep it strong … all the best ❤’.
Kate Middleton has long been a fan of Emilia Wickstead’s designs. The Duches regularly wears her dresses whilst on royal engagements, both in the UK and abroad. Meghan herself has also opted for the designer once since becoming engaged to Prince Harry – for an Anzac Day service at Westminster Abbey.
