Pizza – dubbed ‘the world’s saddest polar bear’ – captured the hearts of animal lovers across the globe when pictures of him languishing at China’s Grandview Mall, made headlines.
And now it seems that there may finally be a ray of hope in the young polar bear’s tumultuous life. Albeit a temporary one. Pizza has been reunited with his parents at his birthplace at an undisclosed ocean park in North China.
But while the emotional reunion should be the start of a happy new chapter for Pizza, it seems that officials at the Grandview aquarium have other ideas. They revealed that the move has only taken place in order to renovate Pizza’s mall enclosure.
Humane Society International (HSI) and its Chinese animal group partner, Capital Animal Welfare Association (CAWA), have urged Grandview to turn Pizza’s temporary new home into a permanent one.
On Pizza’s plight Peter Li, from the HSI, said:
“Pizza the polar bear has endured a life of deprivation and suffering in his small, artificial, glass-fronted room at the shopping mall.
“So the news that he’s getting out at last makes me very happy and relieved for him. But we implore the mall to make this a permanent move for Pizza.”
Continuing he added:
“No amount of renovation could ever make a shopping mall a suitable place for this animal.
“And to send him back now would be cruel and heartless. We commend the mall for being gracious enough to listen to Chinese and global voices of concern, and hope they will do the right thing for this poor bear who has already been through enough.”
More than a million people have signed a petition calling for Pizza to be removed from the Grandview Mall. With Professor Alastair Macmillan, a veterinary adviser for the HSI, revealing that a recent clip of Pizza showed signs of ‘mental decline’ we’re really rooting for a turnaround in Pizza’s life!
