Sometimes it's ok to break the rules....

A hospital in Denmark went against usual protocol and gave a dying man his last chance to enjoy a white wine and a cigarette while he enjoyed the sunset.

The hospital released the photograph, which depicts 75-year-old Carsten Flemming Hansen watching the sky at dusk from a hospital balcony.

Carsten was admitted to Aarhus University Hospital last week suffering from a ruptured aortic aneurysm and was told he had just days, if not hours, to live.

Carsten told his nurse Rikke Kvist of his wish to enjoy his last hours the way he wanted. And although the hospital has a no smoking policy, an exception was granted in this case.

“It was a very cozy and relaxed atmosphere,” said Ms Kvist. “Of course they were relatives also affected by the fact that he was going to die, and they were sad.

“But it was cozy and there was humour.”

Carsten passed away on Friday.
