If your hair is all one length, the easiest way to get it out of your face is by pulling it back into a low ponytail like Beyonce’s. Great if you have thick hair, smooth any flyaways down with tail comb and finishing crème and secure it at the nape of your neck. Finish with hairspray to set your pony in place.
Brooke Shields shows us how to rock the natural wavy look. Beachy but without being dry in texture, use a frizz-fighting curl cream first, followed by a diffuser to help your curls form. Leaving the roots and mid-lengths straighter means you don’t have to worry about them dropping out either while a messy parting adds to the overall carefree vibe.
Emma Watson’s side plait is perfect for holiday season – you don’t even need a mirror so you can just as easily tie it back on the beach. Simply pull your hair in front of one shoulder and start braiding. Use a thin elastic to secure your hair rather than a thick bobble then smooth the ends with serum. If you have fine hair and worried your plait looks weedy, just use your fingers to loosen some of the sections for a thicker-looking style.
Kate Bosworth’s textured low ponytail is brilliant if you’ve spent all day in the sea but don’t want to head back to the hotel before you go out for dinner. All you need to do is tie your hair back when it’s still damp and let the sea salt work it’s magic, or fake it by scrunching a salt spray through your hair to recreate those rumpled loose waves.
A half up half down do is fab for keeping layers and long fringes off your face in hot weather, especially if you don’t want to tie all of your hair back. Sandra Bullock keeps her hair slightly kinked for a more laid-back feel but it works just as well on naturally curly hair too if it’s too bulky to style into a ponytail.
Headscarfs are a summer saviour when it comes to hair as they can hide a multitude of sins – frizz, greasy hair, roots…plus they work on all hair lengths and are great for holding shorter layers in place. Then there’s the fact they protect your hair and scalp from the sun’s rays too. Copy fashionista Caryn Franklin and wrap one around your updo.
Short hair is a godsend at this time of year as it has the luxury of being get-up-and-go. If yours has a tendency to fall flat, take a leaf out of Halle Berry’s book and run some texturising wax or putty through the top sections, lifting your hair up and through your fingers to give your hair added volume and height.
