Say it with sequins, Mel

Former Spice Girl turned talent show judge Mel B is currently in the midst of a well publicised, bitter divorce battle with her ex Stephen Belafonte.

Mel B announced the divorce back in March, but the couple are said to have separated in December 2016 following “irreconcilable differences”. Since then, there has been plenty of slander, salacious gossip and shocking rumours surrounding the couple and their reasons for splitting after 10 years of marriage.

Mel and Stephen married in 2007 following a whirlwind five month romance. The couple filed for divorce in March this year after rumours circulated that he had cheated on the former Spice Girl.

In the midst of accusations of affairs, bankruptcy, infidelity, threesomes and more between Mel B and Belafonte, the star formerly known as ‘Scary Spice’ used her appearance at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards to make a huge statement about the divorce proceedings and her marriage, directed at her ex.

Mel chose a dress by brand DI$COUNT UNIVERSE for the star-studded occasion, and literally sparkled under the spotlights and flash of the paparazzi’s cameras when she arrived at the event.

The dress featured the words “You will never own me” emblazoned across the front of the dress. DI$COUNT UNIVERSE have a similar dress on its site in black which is selling for $399.

While Mel made no comment on the meaning behind her attire, for many the dress was clearly a defiant message to Stephen as they wait for the next stage of the divorce to commence.

Earlier this year, Mel B accused her former nanny Lorraine Gilles of having an affair with Stephen. This resulted in Lorraine bringing a defamation case against Mel and winning the right to a jury trial.

Mel’s lawyer tried to fight against a jury trial. They said that Mel had no choice but to publicly name Lorraine so that she could get a retraining order against her ex-husband.

Judge Dalila Lyons has stressed that Mel and Lorraine could come to a settlement agreement as the trial does not commence until 23 July 2018.

It is reported that Mel has asked for joint legal and physical custody of the couples one daughter.
