We all want whiter teeth, and it’s worth the trip to the dentist and a long session in the chair to get your pearly whites sparkling again. But did you know that it’s possible to get whiter teeth and keep them healthy at home in between dentist appointments? Then you’ve got to try these handy tips and money-saving tricks…
Here’s what you do to achieve whiter teeth, and keep them healthy at home – some of these may surprise you!
1. Brush your teeth BEFORE breakfast
Crazy but a must-do! Apparently if you brush your teeth within an hour of eating, you will brush off your enamel so it’s best to brush before.
2. Tea can prevent cavities!
Apparently according to the Readers Digest flavonoids and other ingredients found in tea prevent harmful bacteria from sticking to teeth as well as blocking the production of a type of sugar that contributes to cavities. This is all thanks to the fact tea contains high amounts of fluoride, so get drinking!
3. Stop! Don’t rinse!
Word on the street is that you don’t need to rinse your mouth with water after brushing! Yes it’s true! Dr Chris van Tulleken says, “Just spit out what’s left in your mouth. By not rinsing, the fluoride stays in your mouth longer and continues to do its job.”
4. Drink water after a meal
This may be something you do DURING your meal but it’s important to do it afterwards too. Drinking water will clear out your mouth and wash away any stray foody bits and sugar that may linger on your teeth causing cavities.
5. Be careful what you eat!
‘Have a healthy balanced diet’ says Dr Mark Hughes the founder of the Harley Street Dental Group, “Avoid sugary and acidic foods as this creates erosion and decay of the teeth.”
6. Go for an alcohol-free mouthwash
According to The Readers Digest tons of mouthwashes contain too much alcohol which can dry out the tissues in your mouth, making them more susceptible to bacteria.
7. Use a ripe strawberry to whiten your teeth!
Strange we know but research has shown that really ripe strawberries can actually help your teeth look whiter thanks to the malic acid that acts like an exfoliator for your teeth! Simply mash up some ripe strawberry, pop some on your toothbrush and gently brush your teeth! In two weeks things should look brighter!
8. Eat cheese!
According to Dr Mark Hughes Panasonic’s Smile Expert, you should end your meals with some cheese as it increases your saliva flow and helps to restore the pH balance in your mouth after eating sugary or acidic foods. We won’t argue with that!
8. Clean your teeth properly at home
Clean in-between each tooth and around the mouth and work from one corner of the mouth to the other, brushing all areas, says Dr Mark Hughes. Make sure you brush for at least two minutes each and every time. Top tip: Make the investment and buy an electric toothbrush (recommended by nearly all dentists) and use the built in timer as it can really help make sure you are brushing for the recommended time.
9. Pick the right products

10. Select celery
Eating foods such as cauliflower, apples, celery, and carrots can all help you get whiter teeth. These natural food choices are great for maintaining a healthy smile because they contain a type of acid which removes surface stains from teeth and whitens the enamel.
11. Cut back on coffee
Unfortunately, your daily caffeine boost isn’t doing much good to your teeth. Both coffee and red wine are guilty of staining your smile, so if you want whiter teeth, try and cut back on how many cups or glasses you have a week.
