We all know how annoying it is to sit near someone who is eating loudly. Audible chewers are one of the nations biggest bugbears. However, do you ever pay attention to the sound of yourself eating?

Well, new research by Brigham Young University and Colorado State University suggests that the key to losing weight without having to go on a classic ‘diet’ is to be aware of the ‘noise’ your food makes while you’re eating it!

The “Crunch Effect,” as they call it, suggests you’re more likely to eat less if you’re more conscious of the sound your food makes while you’re eating.

So, if you’re munching loudly on crisps you’re more likely to eat less of them, as opposed to sipping quietly on a warming soup.

However, for this weight loss hack to work you need to make sure that you’re not eating with any background noise around you. So no music playing whilst you eat, and certainly not eating in front of the TV!

One of the researchers explained:

“When you mask the sound of consumption, like when you watch TV while eating, you take away one of those senses and it may cause you to eat more than you would normally”

The general idea is that if you eat in a quieter environment, you will become more aware of what you are eating. So the days of mindless snacking are over. A more mindful approach to eating could mean that you can lose weight without dieting.

Ryan Elder, assistant professor of marketing at BYU’s Marriott School of Management adds, “The effects many not seem huge–one less pretzel–but over the course of a week, month, or year, it could really add up.”
