Debbie McGee hit the top spot of the Strictly Come Dancing leader board last week, after planting a kiss on the lips of her professional partner Giovanni Pernice during their romantic paso doble routine.
And as they approach week 3 of the contest, hunk Giovanni has hinted that surprising smacker could be set to make a return.
Woman caught up with Giovanni and Debbie at the Gala night of Annie the Musical, held at London’s Piccadilly Theatre – starring Craig Revel Horwood as Miss Hannigan, where we asked whether the kiss was set to make a return this weekend.
Giovanni replied: “Who knows? Never say never!” and when we asked whether that kiss was rehearsed in the run up to last week’s show, he teased: “I’m not going to tell you am I?”
Debbie, 58, and Giovanni, 27, scored 64 points and are determined to keep at the top.
“Yes we definitely want to try and keep our title at the top of the leaderboard, I try to keep my cards safe all the time,” said Giovanni. “Its not just being on top of the leaderboard its been really nice to perform every week so looking forward to next week. It’s not a challenge working with Debbie, I enjoy every week. Every week is a different story, a different dancer, you just don’t know week by week.”
When we asked what fans can expect, he replied, “Just a beautiful dance” and teased that he could even try a complex routine like rival couple Aston Merrygold and Jeanette Manrara.
He said: “Every couple is different to the other one, Aston is an amazing dancer and Jeanette is an amazing choreographer so they tried to do something really hard and it happened because their performance was amazing. I would try to do the same with Debbie.”
Speaking about being at the top of the leaderboard, Debbie said: “I’m in a dream, can’t believe it, its fantastic isn’t it? Everything is challenging, none of it is easy and you just have to keep doing it and doing it and then you think I’m getting it, and you just hope you can still do it on the night.”
She teased that dancing with a hunk like Giovanni was “really tough” and added: “He looks in the mirror more than I do.”
Debbie has received some criticism from people who claim her previous ballet training gives her an advantage over those who haven’t professionally danced before, but Debbie has hit back.
She said: “No I really don’t [see it as an advantage]. People who have criticised me really don’t understand I’m nearly 60, I danced as a girl, and yes I did it professionally for three years but since then, I’ve not done it. I’ve choreographed but I’ve never done Ballroom or Latin, and it’s so completely different anyway.
There is a lot of competition but particularly from Aston and also Alexandra. Joe could be a dark horse and all the others have something to give and are popular with the public. I don’t take it [our popularity] for granted. My late husband Paul [Daniels] and I did celebrity X Factor years ago and we were the only people that got a standing ovation from the audience in the studio but we were voted off first and really we were who the audience loved that night.”
She added: “So I don’t take it for granted, I’ll just work as hard as I can and enjoy it.”
