"I was lying to myself"

Despite divorcing in 1999 Coleen Nolan’s failed marriage to ex-EastEnders star Shane Richie continues to hit the headlines.

And now 18 years on from the showbiz couple’s bitter break up following revelations of his infidelity, Redwater actor Shane has finally revealed what he believes really drove a wedge between the couple.

Speaking to Daily Mail’s Event Magazine he confessed: “I lost my first wife through my drinking. A bottle of Jack [Daniel’s] and I was off.

“By 1996 my ego had taken over. I was getting a police escort to nightclubs. I’d be thinking, I’m 30, I’ve got bad skin but all these girls are screaming for me outside.”

Shane continued: “It went to my head and I was a bit out of control.

“I’d just had a Daz ad where they paid me a load of money and I thought I was sorted for life, that it was going to last for ever. I believed the hype and I do regret that now.

“I was lying to myself about the drinking and the women, thinking I was pulling the wool over the public’s eyes. I’d be on TV advocating monogamy [on his marital game show ‘Love Me Do’] while I was having an affair, for God’s sake.”

Shane’s admission comes as the former couple prepare to come face-to-face on a forthcoming episode of Loose Women. While the episode isn’t expected to focus on their past relationship, it’s clear that emotions are still raw.

Appearing on an episode of Channel 5’s In Therapy earlier this year, Coleen opened up about the pain of finding out her husband of seven years had been unfaithful.

“He was so brilliant at convincing me I was wrong. He would look me right in the eyes… and convince me I was wrong. He made me feel paranoid,” she said.

“I remember that feeling of elation when I found out [he was having an affair].. I went ‘Yes! I knew it…’

“It was a feeling of euphoria before the absolute devastation hit me – he still convinced me to stay.”
