JLOKeeping your hair trend vocabulary up to date can be tricky – after all, there seems to be a new term popping up every week! ‘Strobing’ is one of the newer trends doing the salon rounds, but what does it actually mean?

Like the most asked-for hair trend of 2015 – balayage – and ombre before it, strobing sees stylists getting creative with colour by using a graduated highlighting technique.

This time the results are more natural, and stylists promise a specially tailored look that will accentuate features with a high gloss finish, but does it deliver? We went along to strobing specialists Andrew Jose on Charlotte Street to find out…

“The beautiful thing about strobing is that the stylist can tailor the look to exactly what will suit your face and face shape,” Andrew Jose Colour Director Nalan explained during a pre-colour one-to-one consultation. “After glancing over my features she concluded: “So with you, your strongest feature is your eyes, so we’ll start the highlights there to enhance them.”

Strobing is a great way to add some definition and texture to your hair, and, when done cleverly, it can draw attention to the areas you like and away from problem areas.

Adding highlights around the face, especially teamed with a relaxed, wavy style, will create a softer look, drawing attention away from fine lines and wrinkles.

Celebs like Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Lopez and supermodel Gigi Hadid are all fans of the look, showcasing natural sunkissed highlights.

“Your natural hair colour and skin tone must be considered when choosing or changing your colour, too. It’s definitely not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ technique,” Nalan added.

With a hair treatment that uses no colouring cap or foils, I was a little dubious as to whether my hair would end up looking a little uneven, but after watching Nalan’s confident brush strokes in the mirror, I began to relax. During strobing the colour is applied freehand, with cling film separating the layers of colour.

The great thing about this technique is that you can go as subtle or bold as you like. As long as your have a colourist who’s well trained in the technique, you can’t go wrong with a natural, sun-kissed look.

“With a bold colour look like this, the right aftercare is as important as the colouring process,” Nalan added. “We use Salon Science Swiss Grape Cleansing System followed by the Recorrect Leave-In Treatment and Reglosse Serum, which are packed with antioxidants and moisturising ingredients for a glossy finish.”
